Ancient Ohazu community in Aba South LGA has won the maiden edition of the All Ngwa Unity Cup Tournament sponsored by US-based Pharmacist and philanthropist, Dr. Victor Chinedu Egbulefu.
Aba South LGA team defeated their opponents from Obingwa LGA 1:0 in the final match played on Thursday at the Ngwa High School football ground.
The lone and winning goal was scored in the first half of the keenly contested encounter.
Aba South team smiled home with 1.5 million naira in addition to a giant trophy.
The runners up Obingwa and the 3rd placed team, Aba North went home with 1 million naira and half a million naira respectively.
Isiala Ihie community team from Ugwunagbo LGA which came fourth went home with 200,000 naira.
The sponsor of the football competition, Dr. Victor Chinedu Egbulefu commended members of the organising committee for ensuring the success of the tournament.
Dr. Egbulefu called on other kind hearted persons to join him in order to have a bigger competition.
“I’m optimistic that next year’s competition will be bigger and better than this.
“My vision is to create excitement in my community during a period like this (festive season).
“I’m happy it turned out the way it is. We need this to continue and even become a tradition” he said.
The coach of the Aba South team, Chiabuotu Iheasimuo popularly known as “onye keke” described the All Ngwa Unity Cup Tournament as the best and first of its kind not only in Ngwa land but the entire state.
An elated Coach Iheasimuo commended Dr. Egbulefu for his various philanthropic acts and boasted that Aba South LGA team will retain the cup in the second edition of the tournament.
His words “I thank the donor (Dr. Egbulefu) and this is one of the best competitions we played in Abia state.
“I believe that if we continue like this, it will attract more players. I commend and appreciate the donor. God bless him”.
112 communities from the 7 local government areas of Ngwa land participated in the maiden edition of the football competition.
The competition started on Saturday, 23rd October, 2021 at the Boys’ Technical College (BTC) Aba.
The objectives of the competition sponsored by Dr. Victor Chinedu Egbulefu, an indigene of Osusu community in Aba North LGA are; talent hunt, talent discovery, showcasing and harvesting talents, youth empowerment through victory awards and promoting unity among communities.
