The Director General of the Nigeria Center for Disease Control, NCDC, Chikwe Ihekweazu, has warned that as the economy reopens there are high risks of the further spread of Covid19.

Discussing the response to COVID19 on Nigerian Info FM via teleconference medium, Chikwe said the NCDC has successfully curtailed an explosion of cases. Noting that as the economy reopens further, there is likely to be an increase in the transmission of COVID19. Pointing that the risk should be mitigated.

“We‘ve done fairly well in preventing an explosion of cases. As the economy reopens further, there are opportunities for an upsurge in transmission & we have to mitigate this risk,” says Chikwe.

According to Chikwe, there might be another big outbreak of COVID19 in the country, giving that Nigerians reside mostly in the tropics.

In his own words; “Our country is densely populated in the tropics, there’s no better place for viruses to thrive. It’s hard to say but this may not be our last big outbreak,” Chikwe stressed.

Chikwe equally assured the public that NCDC is working towards building a culture of awareness and responsiveness to be able to respond if need be. “We’re working to build a culture of awareness & responsiveness so we’re better prepared to respond,” he concluded.

Chikwe made his response available via tweets on his official twitter handle.
