Onitsha Fire: Governor Obiano Visits Scene, Commiserates With Victims

Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano has visited scene of the fire incident that destroyed life and property in the Onitsha tanker fire incident.

Governor Obiano commiserated with State citizenry and residents who were either directly or indirectly affected by the inferno.

He said that even though investigation is still ongoing to ascertain circumstances surrounding the incident, a panel has been set up, headed by the deputy Governor, Dr Nkem Okeke, to do a thorough assessment of the remote and immediate causes of the incident, with a view to proferring sustainable solutions.

Governor Obiano called for calm on the part of those affected, and to cooperate with members of the panel who will commence work from tomorrow, as his government remains resolute in its commitment to the safety of life and property of the State citizenry.

Commissioner of police and Chief of staff to the Governor, Mr Primus Odili, Commissioner for Works, Engineer Marcel Ifejiofor, House of Assembly members representing the area, recieved the Governor.

Recall that yesterday 16/10/2019 at about 12:59 pm, a trailer loaded with petroleum product lost control at upper iweka, along Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, Onitsha and crashed inside a pavement in between the expressway, as a result of which fire spilled over through the gutter and consumed shops and houses.

According to police statement yesterday, Police patrol teams consequently cordoned off the area to prevent hoodlums from taking advantage to loot while effort is still ongoing to put off the fire, while investigation had commenced into the incident.
