When saddled with leadership positions, the essence is to solve problems. Therefore, leadership is all about problem solving. Based on this fact, a leader should think outside the box by proposing and initiating policies and programmes loaded with vision that enable him to solve problems. Among the candidates that have presented themselves for the Abia gubernatorial race next year, Prof Uche Ikonne, the PDP candidate has demonstrated strong capacity of thinking outside the box.
Thinking outside the box, which is also referred to as thinking out of the box or thinking beyond the box, is widely used in business circles, especially by management consultants and executive coaches. The phrase has been referenced in a number of advertising slogans. The phrase was derived from management consultants in the 1970s and1980s challenging their clients to solve the “nine dots” puzzle, whose solution requires some lateral thinking . It is a metaphor that means to think differently, unconventionally, or from a new perspective. It often refers to novel or creative thinking.
One of his laudable proposals is to create an Aba Development Authority that will create a participatory environment that will strengthen the relationship and restore the confidence of residents in government.
According to him, there will be an administrator whose duty will be to drive locally-led initiatives and policies that will advance the economic and social welfare of the community.
He said:”I know Aba people and their desire for independence and being part of governance, I will create a system that they will have direct participation and control of a system that will guarantee them the opportunity to contribute to public policy making and service provision, fiscal autonomy, and service delivery”.
This policy deserves a resounding applause, considering the strategic position of Aba as the hub of Aba economy.
