The Chairman, College of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU), of Abia State College of Education (Technical) Arochukwu, (ASCETA), Egesi Kevin reportedly collapsed during a protest the academic and non academic staff unions of the college.

The workers were protesting what they described as the disparity in salary payment compared with what obtains in other higher institutions in Nigeria.

Kevin is reported to have collapsed during a meeting with the local government chairman and rushed to Arochukwu General Hospital and later transferred to a hospital in Umuahia for further treatment.

According to a statement, despite the incident, the protesting workers were said to have continued with their protest, pressing home their demand.

They highlighted the non-implementation of CONPCASS/CONTEDISS since 2011, leading to 26 months of salary arrears.

The statement added that the protesters expressed their frustration, stating that the situation has left them hungry and struggling to make ends meet.

“We call on Governor Alex Otti to intervene and address our plight. We recount how in 2015 when Governor Okezie Ikpeazu won the election, we were mocked to go meet Dr Otti, whom they said we voted for instead of the PDP. This made every of our pleas and protests to be ignored throughout Ikpeazu’s tenure.

“Now that Governor Otti has assumed office, we believe it is the right time for him to fulfil his promises and implement our full salary structure”, the workers demanded.
