Harold Terens, a 100-year-old World War Two veteran, has married his sweetheart Jeanne Swerlin, 96, in Carentan, France, near the Normandy beaches. The ceremony took place on June 8, just days after the 80th anniversary of D-Day.

As they exchanged vows, Terens said, “With this ring, I thee wed,” to which Swerlin gasped and giggled, “Really?”

During the toast, Terens took the opportunity to express his wishes for peace and democracy worldwide, saying, “To everybody’s good health. And to peace in the world and the preservation of democracy all over the world and the end of the war in Ukraine and Gaza.”

The couple was honored with an invitation to spend their wedding night at a state dinner with French President Emmanuel Macron and US President Joe Biden at the Élysée Palace. Terens described the day as “the best day of my life.”
