Ganduje shuts all schools in Kano, orders parents to evacuate children

The Kano State governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, has ordered the closure of all public and private schools in the state.

In a terse statement by the state commissioner for Education, Sanusi Kiru, the state government did not give reasons for the decision.

“His Excellency, The Executive Governor of Kano State has approved the closure of all public and private schools in the state with immediate effect.

“Parents whose children are in boarding schools are to also arrange and convey their children/wards back home from tomorrow, Wednesday, 16th December, 2020.

“All inconveniences are regretted,” the statement added.

DAILY NIGERIAN reports that as escalation in the cases of COVID-19 infections in the country forces some states to shut down schools, resurgence of abduction and banditry forces others to take the decision.

In the wake of mass abductions of schoolboys in Kankara, the Katsina State Government shut all boarding schools in the state, while the Zamfara State Government, which shares borders with Katsina, took a similar decision to forestall recurrence of the Kankara incident.

On the spike in coronavirus cases, the Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has shut down schools in the state, following reported resurgence of COVID-19 infections in the state.
