The party’s National Working Committee (NWC) has allegedly convened a meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) against the alleged plans to Defect Governor Umahi from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The meeting, is scheduled for Thursday, November 19th at the Party’s National Secretariat, Wadata Plaza, Abuja.
Before the NEC emergency on Thursday, the Board of Trustees (BoT), the party’s highest advisory body, is due to meet on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
As a result, Ebonyi State Governor Dave Umahi, who told a delegation from the PDP NWC led by National Chairman Uche Secondus that he had decided to leave the PDP, overtured his counterpart in the state is believed to have made overtures Abia, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu to take him to the APC.
Meanwhile, in an effort to reposition itself before the next election, the PDP’s southwest leadership has recognized the role of Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde in the region and has agreed to work with him to create the party move forward.
Umahi is said to have made his planned rejection dependent on the agreement with the APC that the party’s presidential candidate should be deported to the southeast.
He claimed the PDP had been unfair to the Southeast since 1999 for deliberately refusing to bring the party’s presidential ticket into the zone.
In addition, the zone is said to be dissatisfied with the appointment of Peter Obi to join Atiku Abubakar, the PDP’s presidential candidate in the last parliamentary elections.
A source in the PDP said Obi was an imposition as there were politicians in the southeast who could have given the zone more credibility and weight in order to garner more votes.
However, it was informed that in addition to his decision to contact the APC, Umahi has also made efforts to solicit other PDP governors in the zone to go to the APC with him, with Ikpeazu being the first on his List is.
According to a source familiar with some of the undercurrents, “at least three APC governors must be deployed in the southeast to convince the APC leadership to get the APC presidential ticket to the zone. ”
Although it was done with the consent of the Pan Igbo sociocultural group leadership, the Ohaneze Ndigbo.
Since the PDP deliberately refused to bring their presidential ticket into the zone, the Igbo will go with any political party that defies their interests. Check out since 1999, the southeast is a backbone of the PDP and nothing to show.
“South-South produced the President of Nigeria in the person of Goodluck Jonathan. Olusegun Obasanjo from the southwest was president of the PDP platform for eight years.
The Northwest had it in the late Umaru Yar’Adua and although it did not win, the Northeast produced the PDP’s presidential candidate in the 2019 general election. Something needs to be done in the Southeast for the massive support of the PDP, ”the source said.
For this reason, the PDP has called an NEC emergency meeting to address this PDP concern in the southeast.
A party leader and former aviation minister, Femi Fani-Kayode, described the report of the planned raid on Umahi as “worrying” last week.
Fani-Kayode therefore called on the national leadership of the PDP to pacify Umahi, as other governors in the party could follow the governor of Ebonyi to the APC.
He tweeted, “I urge the PDP leadership to do everything possible to make sure that he stays. Not only is he a deeply good man and an excellent governor, his contributions to the success of the PDP over the past 20 years at various levels have been immeasurable and simply extraordinary.
In that case, it will have a significant impact on our party’s chances in the 2023 presidential election. I again urge the National Chairman and the NWC of our major party to do everything possible to keep Umahi on board. “
