TRUMP’S SECOND IMPEACHMENT TRIAL TO BEGIN SOON:

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said Friday that he had spoken to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and that the article of impeachment against former President Donald Trump would be transmitted to the Senate on Monday, starting the process of a trial in the Senate.

‘Make no mistake: There will be a full trial. There will be a fair trial,’ Schumer tweeted, speaking out the charge against Trump for incitement of insurrection. While Senate rules say a trial must begin almost immediately when articles are received, Schumer and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) are negotiating the terms and schedule.

Democrats want to ensure they can continue holding confirmation hearings for President Biden’s Cabinet nominees while proceeding with a trial. McConnell had asked to start it in mid-February so Trump could have more time to assemble his legal team and mount a defense.

Lawyers from Trump’s first impeachment trial have said no to signing on for a second time. Trump was acquitted by the then GOP majority Senate in February 2020, but there might be more Republican support for conviction this time, with the potential of barring him from running for future office.
